More Sketches

And here are more sketches from Pixar.

Incredibles: This is the one I'll actually be trying to do for my poster.

Nemo: The first picture is the one I'll be doing.

Wall-e:

And here are a bunch of Kill Bill sketches that I won't be using, but I thought they were entertaining.

Film Festival Update

Hey all, I thought I'd update everyone (anyone) on the film festival posters that I'm doing. I talked with Justin on our field trip to the Ventura Printing place and he also wanted to do Tarantino. We discussed ideas we had, and we both decided that we would do some thumbnails for all the movies we wanted to do and let Joe decided which ones were working for us.

I came up with some ideas for Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and Kill Bill 2. While I was in the hospital with Mandy and her mom, I came up with an idea for Reservoir Dogs.

I thought it looked awesome. If you haven't seen the movie or have seen the movie and just don't understand, it's the ties and names that were given to the guys doing the robbery job. Each guy got a name, which was a color. Except for Mr. Blonde. so i just put a dirty blonde color in there. I know some people will call fowl because there were 6 members in the team and not 5. But you know what, Tarantino was not added because he's a director and not an actor :P So we had.. Mr. White, Mr. Pink, Mr. Orange, Mr. Blue, Mr. Blonde.. and Tarantino was Mr. Brown.

I had some ideas for Kill Bill, but I wanted it all to look kind of like what I had for Reservoir Dogs. Mandy had the brilliant idea of suggesting the use of snakes, because each of the members on this assasination squad was named after a snake. Best of all, there were 5 of them! Just like the Reservoir Dogs ties that I had posted up. So I was going to do something like that. But I had also made a ton of Pixar sketches to do just in case.

Joe looked at both my Pixar and Tarantino films and he loved my Pixar sketches more so than the Tarantino. I was fine with the decision, infact, I think I'll really enjoy doing the Pixar films over the Tarantino. So I told Justin he can do Tarantino, so I am curious what he comes up with.

I am going to scan in my Pixar sketches when I get home, but the idea for all of them would be taking a real picture of the scenario to give it a 3-D feel without it being made on a computer. Of course I'll touch it up in Photoshop, but I like idea and so does Joe.

*Update*

So I'm at home now, here are some sketches I came up with for the Pixar Film Festival which I am calling "Pix Flix"

Here's one for The Incredibles

And some for Finding Nemo

Final Decision

So i made up my mind, and I'll be doing the Tarantino Film Festival. I might work on the name. But the movies I'll be doing are hm.. I think I just changed my mind on one of them, but I'll be doing Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs, and either Pulp Fiction or Boondock Saints.

I'd post some pictures, but i just got word that my fiance's sister is in the emergency room right now so I have to book it over to her place ASAP.

Film Festival ideas

So this next project has got me a bit excited, we are doing a film festival poster. Well, we are doing three. It can be on three films a director did, three films a specific actor did, or three films that all relate to one another. When I first heard of this I wanted to do Clint Eastwood or some sort of tribute to Spaghetti Westerns. Then as I went through it all, I thought "What about Pixar?" then "Johnny Depp movies would be fun.." and of course "Quentin Tarantino would be a fun one too.."

So here's what I'd have

For the Spaghetti Westerns/Clint Easwood I'd do: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars, and For a Few Dollars More.

Then for Pixar I'd do: Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles. I might even drop Toy Story and put Wall-e in there for fun.

Johnny Depp movies I'd do: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Ninth Gate.

And finally the Tarantino films would be: Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs, and Pulp Fiction.

I've been doing some thumbnail sketches on them all to get an idea as to which would be my best bet. All of them I could do passionately, it'd be hard to really pick the one I'd love to do more though. HELP! lol

Completed

So here it is, the finished product. It isn't what i expected when I first started it, but I like it. If i were to go back and try using the real photos, I would probably have actual pictures of someone that I would take and alter myself. I can't deal with these stock photos.

Poster Ideas

So here are some of the ideas I've come up with. First it's a poster I took straight out of my sketching.

To be fair, I didn't have a lot of time to work on this. So I know the font still needed to be experimented with and the overall look of it needed to be improved. From here I moved onto this one.

I was getting a little tired of having this realistic look and then using brushes and textures to play with it to try and make it how I want it to be. I wish I had someone who actually had some ski goggles, a mask, and a large jumper I could take pictures of to get the exact picture I want rather than settling. Anyway, at this point I wanted to play with Illustrator.

I liked it, much better. I'd probably crop some of it out though and work on it. This got me inspired to do something more abstract, and I looked for a speed skater up close. Unfortunately.. like usual.. I couldn't find what I was looking for. But I found this picture, and I thought it may work well after I made it abstract. Here are my renditions of it.

I really like how it came out, but I changed it up a bit a few times and I think I like this one more.

And in a bit I'll be off to class to see what everyone else thinks.

Poster Ideas..

So over the weekend I came up with a few sketches for a poster design. I am trying to go for something different when it comes to the sports aspect of the poster. For example, everyone has the standard person jumping off the ski jump, or an ice skater doing a trick as they capture that moment and throw it onto the poster. I want to have more of a look of anticipation or a sense of focus that we see in the athlete's eyes. That look of determination, which I think is what really is what the Olympics is all about. We aren't all just born with the ability to run fast, we have to practice and get better at it.

Last week I had a few sketches already done for class, and Joe really liked the one where I had just focused in on a skiers face. So all you see is half of their reflective goggles and a slight bit of their face. But not enough to really say if who you were looking at was either male or female. And that's something I kind of want to get across. That what you are looking at could be anyone, maybe even the viewer if they desire to. I'll have my roughs up when I get home. In the mean time, what does everybody think?

Oslo Complete

Well after tinkering with it, I have made the final version. After some critiques in class, I changed it a bit so people could see the viking ship more clearly. I could see the ship pretty well, but if nobody else can then we have a problem. After changing it, I asked Joe if I should add some wave effects to it. He told me to send him a picture through AIM or email and he would give his input when he sees it. After altering it, I was pretty happy with how it was turning out. He liked it too, so here we are on the final print of my Oslo logo.

I'm off to the printing center to get it printed on an 11x17inch wide paper so I can turn it in on Thursday. I already have some sketches of what I may do for the poster so I'll post them later.

Oslooo

I'm getting to the point where I am tired of seeing the word Oslo, the capital of Norway. I've gone through a bunch of different fonts and I've come up with only a few that I really like. As promised, this is what I've come up with.

It's come a long way from my rough sketches, but I feel like I'm missing something with it. My brother wants me to add sails to it, but I think it would just clutter things up. We'll see how it all turns out I guess. I'm hoping with some comments from not only my professor but other students and friends that I can improve this.

Norway

I've decided instead of Iceland or Denmark to do the Norse motherland and do Norway. I'm pretty happy with the new designs I've come up with and I'm curious to see how it goes tomorrow. After class I'll upload some pictures.

Stop the Presses!

I think I came up with my favorite Icelandic/Denmark Winter Olympics logo so far.

See?? It's a viking ship and the Olympic Rings make up the Shields that are normally along the side of it. Brilliant!

Olympics Project

Today we were given a project to do which is due on Thursday. We have to create our own logo for the Olympics, but it can be very any city. Just realistically, you can't have the summer Olympics in a cold country and vise verse.

So I thought about some fun designs I could come up with. The first thing that popped into my head was Iceland or Denmark capital's for the Winter Olympics 2018. The theme of it all would be Norse-Viking. I drew out a few sketches on the back of my last semester art history paper. I'm going to throw a few sketches out on here and I'd like to hear some feedback from anyone if where I'm going is the right direction.I've also got a backup just in case I wasn't feeling the Viking theme and decided to pick Dublin, Ireland.

I got a fun idea with Celtic knots and the four leaf clover playing into it. On a side note my buddy got into a 5 car pile up on the 101 a few days ago. He just got this car a few months ago and now it's completely totaled and he's hurting pretty bad so I'm going to go with my fiancé to an Italian deli and pick him up some food to get him back into good spirits.

This may be my most creative one of the bunch. This one is Frigga and Freya, they are Norse Goddesses.

Frigga was the goddess of love, marriage, and destiny. She was the wife of the powerful Norse god Odin. A sky goddess, responsible for weaving the clouds (and therefore for sunshine and rain and the fertility of the crops), she was also responsible for weaving the fates, as well as a 'seer', one who knew the future though she could never change it.And Freya was a warrior goddess, a Valkyrie, and also the goddess of sensual love. Though this captivating goddess had numerous lovers, she was the wife of the mysterious Norse god Od. I choose these two because they could be the same person (Authors are pretty split on this, but they believe they are the same person). Their colors are red, green, black, white, and silver. Practically the colors of the Olympic Rings.

So with this one, I just played with the Norse characters. I see the possibilities with it, but I'm afraid it won't really translate well into other cultures. However, I do really think it's a unique look.

This is a Shield Knot that I integrated the Olympic rings into. This was all done with pen on paper so I don't expect it to be perfect, just a very rough idea. The Shield Knot symbolizes protection. And in this day in age, I believe we all need some protection.

This is a Triskel, this a three legged good luck symbol. Also integrating the Olympic rings.

These are the Dublin, Ireland ones. This one came to mind when I thought of rings.

This one I like a lot, but making the 8 and the B as a clover. I am not sure how well this one will translate or if people will get it.

And finally, this one is my dad's favorite. So we'll see what I can do with it.

First Day of Second Semester Summer School

This blog was created for my Advanced Typography class, but I'll probably keep this and use it for some long term blogging.

I'm majoring into Animation so I am curious as to see where this class will go as it really seems to be more for Graphic Designers. This class will go for about 6 weeks, and apparently I'll have 3 days of real actual summer vacation before fall semester starts. I'm thinking about going camping with my friends and my fiancé. Funny thing is, my fiancé has never been camping before. So this should be fun. I've been working on an Illustrator picture of me and my fiancé for a few days now off and on. I'll post a picture of what it looks like now and where I am presently and I'd like some feedback if I could get any.
